What to Expect
For young children, lessons will involve a variety of activities to help them engage and enjoy the process. Repetition, praise and incremental learning ensures the success of every student. Regular, consistent practice at home is necessary for students to succeed. Parents of beginning students should expect to sit with their child while they practice and coach them on the points covered in lessons. Students will also spend time at home listening to the music on CD in order to train the ear to hear the proper note tone.

What To Get and Where To Get It

Students ages four and up:
For growing students, we recommend renting a student instrument from Atlantic Strings. Once your student has reached a full size instrument and has interest in continuing instruction your rental fees can be applied towards purchase of the instrument. Rent an instrument that fits your student today and trade in for a larger size as needed. A basic size chart is below. Measure from the neck to the middle of the left palm while arm is held out with elbow straight. At the student's first lesson, I will check the sizing to ensure proper hold and fit.

Instrument size: 1/16     1/10     1/8    1/4    1/2     3/4     4/4
arm length:           14"        15"       16"     18"    20"     22"      23"

In addition to an instrument, students will also need the following items:
  • Rosin (This should come with your instrument.)
  • Shoulder rest (I recommend the Everest Shoulder Rest  for students at 3/4 size instrument or above.)
  • Suzuki Violin book (Beginner students will need book one. Students with previous experience will be placed in the appropriate level at their first lesson.)
